Ezine Number 4, July 9, 2002

From the Ezine Editor

This Ezine will focus on several local AIVF issues. This will give enough time for people to come and contribute on how they want the AIVF to grow. These issues will be discussed over the next several meetings, perhaps to Christmas, along with other business. We've got a little catching up to do because of not having any meetings since December of 2001.

The next AIVF meeting will be on July 16th at the Graysville Public Library, details to follow.

Visions and Objectives of AIVF Birmingham

One of the main objectives of the AIVF is to encourage and support independent filmmaking. With the talent and resources we have in Alabama we could be doing a lot more not only for locally made films but to help bring in films from outside of the state.

This map shows the Regional Salons of the AIVF. As part of a national network of independent filmmakers we could draw on and lend talent and resources from New York to Los Angeles. The other Salons are tied into filmmakers at all levels of the industry. What can we do or how can we participate?

Meeting places

This is a critical issue for AIVF Birmingham now. In the past we've met at Southeastern Film & Post and at Production Plus but due to their commercial interest there has been a conflict at times with their production schedules. The AIVF Birmingham is looking for a good meeting place. It needs to be free or low cost, not in a production facility, and able to accommodate a lot of people. At the moment temporary places are being arranged but we need to find a good permanent home. Please come to the next meeting with your ideas and information of where we could meet.

Production projects

One thing that the AIVF Birmingham can do now is to be a forum for information. If you need assistance on a film project of yours then come ask for help. You might be able to find that certain character actor, snippet of cloth or old military accoutrement to go in your film. For the people that might want to learn about being a grip and for the person looking for grips this would be the place to go and meet up. Need to ask a question about [certain technical information], well there could be the right person you're looking for. This is part of the community aspect of AIVF, come and contribute, and don't miss out.

Information from the national AIVF

There's a lot of information available from the national AIVF. As members you would gain access to benefits and discounts that could help your production.

Here are some of the books from the AIVF.

A nice collection to help get your film off the ground.

In addition there are some really good articles included in the AIVF''s monthly periodical "The Independent"

You can keep up with the latest news and information.

Insightful articles about the national and international filmmaking scene.

Legal issues that affect us as filmmakers.

What's the lowdown on the festival circuit.

It's all available to AIVF members.

Jim Brucke, as Salon Leader, can get a box of these to hand out at the meeting.

Why is Jill Hennessey cavorting around?
Maybe because she read this article about streaming video on the internet, the vanguard of a new distribution system.

Get you copy of "The Independent" and find out.

In closing I'll remind you that we'll be discussing these issues over the next several meetings. Come prepared for these topics. I'll be sending the information about the meeting July 16th at the Graysville Library shortly.
